Resistance is a choice, fitment is not. Within a platform you can usually choose between 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 ohm versions of the same pod, and all three will fit. That is the choice you get to make. Which platform the pod belongs to is not negotiable.

What happens if you force the wrong pod. At best, nothing: the device does not fire because the contacts never meet. More commonly you get a partial connection, an intermittent fire, and liquid leaking into the battery housing, which can damage the device permanently. It is never worth the risk to save a few pounds.

The upgrade question. If you are unhappy with your current platform's pod pricing or availability, the honest answer is that changing pods will not fix it; you need to change device. Step three: wait. This is the step everyone skips. Leave the filled pod standing for five to ten minutes so the cotton saturates completely. Longer is better with thicker, higher VG liquid. If you are impatient, put the pod in your pocket while you do something else; body heat helps.

Step four: prime with your mouth, not the battery. Take three or four draws on the pod without firing the device at all. This pulls liquid through the wick using suction alone and finishes the job the soak started, with zero risk of heat.

Step five: start gently. Take your first two or three real draws short and soft, then let the pod rest for a minute. Only then start vaping normally. The coil needs a few gentle cycles to settle.

What a dry hit is, and why it is permanent. If you fire a coil whose cotton is not fully wet, the cotton itself scorches. That produces a harsh burnt taste, and it does not go away, because burnt cotton cannot be unburnt. No amount of soaking, resting or refilling will recover it. Viscosity matters too. Thicker, higher VG liquid wicks more slowly. Match the liquid to the pod as well as the strength: thin liquid for high resistance, thicker liquid for low resistance.

How Long a Pod Lasts and the Three Signs It Is Finished

There is no fixed lifespan for a refillable pod, which frustrates people who want a number. What there is instead is a set of variables you control and a set of symptoms that tell you clearly when the time has come.

The realistic range. For most adults, a pod lasts somewhere between five days and three weeks. A 1.2 ohm pod run on thin salt liquid by a moderate vaper will sit at the long end. What shortens pod life. Sweeteners are the main culprit. Sucralose and similar compounds caramelise on a hot coil and build a dark crust that insulates the wire and dulls flavour. Dark fruit, dessert and confectionery profiles are generally the heaviest offenders; clean menthols and light fruits are the kindest. Heat is the second factor, which is why lower resistance pods die sooner. Running a pod low on liquid is the third, and it is entirely avoidable.

The three signs it is done.

• Flavour flattens. This is the first and most reliable sign. The liquid tastes muted, generic, or vaguely burnt at the edges even though the pod is full. That is coil residue, and it does not come off.
• Vapour drops off. The same draw on a full battery produces visibly less than it did when the pod was new. If charging does not restore it, the coil is finished.
• It starts spitting or gurgling. A worn wick no longer holds liquid properly, so liquid pools in the airway. Occasional gurgling can be cleared by blowing gently through the pod onto a tissue; persistent gurgling means replacement.

Do not try to nurse a dead pod. Cleaning, rinsing and drying a pod with a burnt coil does not work, because the damage is to the cotton and to the residue baked onto the wire. Rinsing a pod also tends to leave water where you do not want it. Six Habits That Kill a Pod Early

Four: running heavy sweetened liquid in a low resistance pod. A dark dessert or confectionery profile in a 0.6 ohm pod is the shortest-lived combination available. If those are the flavours you love, either accept the replacement rate as part of the cost or move up to 0.8 or 1.2 ohms, where the cooler coil caramelises far less residue.

Five: heat and sunlight. A pod left on a car dashboard in summer will thin the liquid until it seeps past the seals, and heat degrades both the liquid and the wick. Room temperature, upright, out of direct sun. Store spare sealed packs the same way and they will keep for many months.

Six: mismatching strength to resistance. Not strictly a hardware killer, but it makes people replace pods they did not need to replace, because they assume something is faulty when the setup is simply wrong. Twenty milligram salt in a 0.6 ohm pod will feel harsh and burn through liquid; that is the pairing talking, not a defect.

The two minute maintenance routine. Once a week, take the pod out and wipe the contacts on both the pod and the device with a dry tissue or cotton bud.
