HorizonTech Falcon Coils Overview

The HorizonTech Falcon Coils are replacement atomiser heads for tanks in the HorizonTech Falcon range. In any sub-ohm tank the coil is the consumable part that does the real work. It holds cotton against a heating element, draws e-liquid inward by capillary action and turns that liquid into vapour when you press the fire button or take a draw. Flavour, vapour temperature, throat feel, leak behaviour and the number of tank refills you get before a swap is due all depend far more on this small component than on the glass, the metalwork or the battery underneath it. Keeping a spare in the drawer is the difference between a two-minute swap and a day without your device.

The Falcon family was built around mesh heating rather than round wire. A mesh coil is a flat, finely perforated sheet of resistance alloy that is rolled into a cylinder and pressed against a cotton lining. Because the heating surface is wide and thin rather than a narrow wire wrapped around a core, the liquid is warmed more evenly, the warm-up is quick, and the flavour tends to stay consistent from the first draw of a fresh tank to the last. That is the whole reason mesh took over from older round-wire sub-ohm coils across the UK market.

This page covers the Falcon coil range as listed in our accessories section. Five variants are offered, and each one is a separate coil head type or resistance, so the first job is matching the variant to your own tank and power setting. The sections below explain how to choose, how the mesh construction works, what to expect from performance and flavour, how battery draw changes with resistance, which nicotine strengths suit these coils under UK rules, and how to fit, prime and troubleshoot a new head.

  • Product type: replacement mesh atomiser coil for Falcon-family sub-ohm tanks
  • Variants listed: 5, each a different coil head type or resistance
  • Contains nicotine: no, this is a hardware accessory only
  • Typical life: roughly one to two weeks of regular use, depending on liquid, power and habits
  • Buyer age: vaping products are for adults aged 18 or over in the UK

Compatibility and the Five Variants

The most important thing to get right with any coil is compatibility, because heads from different tank families are not interchangeable even when they look similar. Falcon coils are designed for HorizonTech Falcon-series tanks. The coil seats into the base of the tank and is tightened by hand, and the base shape, the airflow openings and the electrical contact are all specific to that system. Before ordering, look at the code or resistance printed on the head currently in your tank, or check the tank packaging. If the name and resistance on your old coil match one of the five variants here, you have the right part. If you are unsure, ask before you buy rather than forcing a head into a tank that was not built for it.

The five variants differ mainly in resistance and in how the mesh is shaped, and those two things set the power window and the character of the vape. As a general rule across mesh coils, a lower resistance head such as a 0.15 ohm design is intended for higher wattage, produces warmer and denser vapour, uses more e-liquid and drains the battery faster. A mid-range head, somewhere around 0.25 to 0.4 ohm, runs at a lower wattage, gives sharper flavour definition and a cooler draw, and is usually kinder to both battery and juice. Always follow the wattage range printed on the coil itself or on its packaging, because that figure is set by the manufacturer for that exact mesh.

  • Lowest resistance variants: suit a powerful mod, a looser airflow setting and a vaper who wants big, warm clouds
  • Mid resistance variants: suit a regulated mod or kit in the 40 to 70 watt region and a vaper who wants flavour first
  • Higher resistance variants: suit lower-powered devices and a tighter, more restricted draw

Think about the device that powers the tank as well. A single-battery mod has a ceiling on how much current it can safely deliver, and a very low resistance head at high wattage can ask for more than a small cell is rated to give. Match the head to the power your mod can supply comfortably, not just to the maximum number on its screen.

Mesh Coil Construction and Heating Technology

Understanding what is inside a mesh head makes the buying and troubleshooting decisions much easier. A Falcon mesh coil is made from a thin strip of resistance alloy, typically a kanthal-family or similar steel-based alloy, that has been punched or etched with a grid of tiny openings and then formed into a cylinder or half-cylinder. Organic cotton sits against the inside face of that mesh. When current flows through the alloy it heats up across its whole surface, and the liquid held in the cotton behind it vaporises. The perforations let fresh e-liquid pass through and let vapour escape without the cotton drying out in patches.

The practical benefits of this design are easy to feel. A round wire coil concentrates heat in a thin line, so the liquid touching that line gets hot and the liquid a few millimetres away does not. Mesh spreads the same energy across a much larger area, which lowers the peak temperature at any single point. Lower peak temperature means fewer burnt notes, less thermal breakdown of sweeteners and flavourings, and a more even taste across a long session. The wide surface also lets the coil reach working temperature in a fraction of a second, which is why a good mesh head feels responsive when you press the button.

There are trade-offs worth knowing. Mesh heads hold more cotton and have more surface to wet, so they need a proper priming period and they punish a tank that has been run too low. Thicker e-liquids with a high VG ratio flow into the cotton more slowly, and if the wicking cannot keep up with the power you are applying, the cotton starts to scorch. The resistance of a mesh head is also low by design, which is why they are normally paired with regulated mods rather than basic fixed-output pens.

  • Heating element: perforated resistance alloy mesh with a cotton lining
  • Heat distribution: wide, even surface rather than a single wire line
  • Wicking: organic cotton, needs priming before the first use
  • Suitable liquids: balanced or higher VG mixes that flow at a moderate rate

Performance, Vapour Delivery and Coil Life

With the right power setting, Falcon mesh coils deliver a smooth, even draw and a decent volume of vapour for the wattage involved. A lower resistance variant at its recommended output will produce warm, dense vapour with a full mouthfeel. A mid-resistance variant at moderate power will produce a cooler, tighter vapour with more of the taste of the liquid coming through. In both cases the response is quick, and the first puff after a break should taste like the rest of the session rather than starting flat and warming up.

Coil life is the figure most people care about. In regular use, a mesh head commonly lasts somewhere between one and two weeks, which for many vapers works out at roughly 40 to 80 millilitres of e-liquid, though the number swings widely. What shortens it fastest is heavy sweetener content. Dessert, custard, candy and heavily flavoured sweet liquids leave a sticky residue on the mesh that slowly clogs the openings, so a head used with those liquids can taste muddy within days. Fruit, menthol and simple tobacco liquids are gentler on the coil. Firing the tank dry, running far above the stated wattage range and chain-vaping without letting the cotton recover also shorten life considerably.

A sensible way to judge when a head has finished is by taste rather than by the calendar. When your favourite liquid starts tasting flat, slightly burnt or oddly muted even after a fresh refill, and priming does not fix it, the coil has done its job. Replacing it at that point is cheaper and more pleasant than pushing on with a degraded head and wasting liquid at the same time.

  • Expected life: about one to two weeks of regular use
  • Shortened by: sweet liquids, dry firing, excess wattage, constant chain-vaping
  • Extended by: proper priming, moderate power, fruit or menthol liquids, rest between long sessions
  • Liquid use: a heavy sub-ohm user can get through several millilitres a day, so plan refills accordingly

Note that UK rules limit the capacity of a refillable tank sold as a nicotine vaping product to 2ml, so you will refill more often than you would with the larger glass fitted to some overseas versions of the same tank.

Flavour Profile and Break-In

Flavour is where mesh coils earn their reputation, and Falcon heads are no exception. Because the heat is spread evenly, the liquid is vaporised at a steadier temperature, which tends to keep delicate top notes such as citrus, mint and soft fruit intact. Rich flavours such as cream, caramel and tobacco also come through cleanly without the scorched edge that can appear when a single hot spot cooks a small part of the cotton. Mid-resistance variants usually give the sharpest definition because they run at lower power, whereas lower resistance variants trade a little of that precision for volume and warmth.

A brand-new head does not taste right on the first draw. The cotton needs to be completely soaked, and the mesh needs a short period of use to settle. Many vapers notice that flavour improves over the first tank, reaches a plateau for most of the coil's life and then fades as residue builds up. That curve is normal. If the first few puffs taste dry, papery or slightly metallic, that is the unprimed cotton or the manufacturing oils on the mesh, not a fault, and it normally clears after a proper prime and a few gentle draws at the low end of the power range.

It is also worth being honest about flavour transfer. A cotton-and-mesh head absorbs some character from whatever liquid goes through it. Switching from a strong menthol to a delicate fruit in the same coil leaves a ghost of the first flavour for a tank or two. If you rotate between very different profiles, the practical answer is to keep a separate coil and tank for each family of flavour, or to accept that a head is better kept to one style at a time.

  • Strengths: clean fruit and menthol notes, steady taste across a tank, quick response
  • Watch for: flavour ghosting when switching profiles, residue build-up with sweet liquids
  • Break-in: prime fully, start at the low end of the wattage range, give it a few draws to settle

Build Quality, Fit and Design Details

A coil is a small part, but small details decide how it behaves. On a Falcon head, the base carries the electrical contact and the seal that stops liquid reaching places it should not. The metal shell holds the mesh and the cotton in a fixed shape, and the wicking holes in the shell are what allow liquid to flow in from the tank reservoir. The silicone or plastic seals at the base need to sit flat and undamaged to prevent leaking. When you unpack a new head, check that these seals are in place, that the shell is not dented or crushed and that the cotton is visible through the wicking holes. A head that arrives crushed or with a missing seal should not be fitted.

Fit is important. The coil should thread or press into the base smoothly, tighten with light finger pressure and then stop. If it feels crooked, grinds or needs force, back it out and try again. Over-tightening can crack the seal or strip the thread, and under-tightening leaves a small gap that lets e-liquid seep into the airflow path and out through the base. Both problems are common causes of leaking that people blame on the coil when the real cause is the fit.

Cotton quality matters as well. Falcon heads use organic cotton lining, which is chosen because it wicks quickly and has little taste of its own. Cheaper imitations often use denser or lower-quality cotton that wicks slowly and burns easily. This is one reason it is worth buying heads from a UK retailer that sources stock properly rather than from a marketplace seller offering heavily discounted clones, because counterfeit heads can have inconsistent resistance, poor welds and unreliable cotton.

  • Check on arrival: seals in place, shell undamaged, cotton visible at the wicking holes
  • Fit: hand-tight only, stop when it seats
  • Materials: resistance alloy mesh, organic cotton, metal shell, silicone or plastic seals
  • Avoid: unbranded clones with uncertain resistance and weak welds

Power Settings, Battery Drain and Charging

A coil does not have a battery of its own, but it has a large effect on how your battery performs, so this is worth understanding. Power in watts, resistance in ohms and current in amps are linked. A 0.15 ohm head fired at 60 watts has about 3.0 volts across the coil and draws roughly 20 amps through it. Seen from the battery side, after the voltage conversion in a regulated mod, a single cell is delivering somewhere in the region of 16 to 18 amps. A 0.25 ohm head at 50 watts has about 3.5 volts across it and draws around 14 amps. Those are significant currents, and they are the reason cell choice matters.

Use a battery whose continuous discharge rating comfortably exceeds the current your coil asks for. Cheap, unbranded or damaged cells with an inflated rating are a genuine hazard at these power levels. Use a dual-battery mod for the lowest resistance heads at high wattage, keep cells wrapped, never carry loose batteries in a pocket with keys or coins, and stop using any cell with torn wrap or dents.

The effect on run time is easy to estimate. A 3,000 mAh cell holds around 11 watt-hours at its nominal voltage. At a steady 60 watts that is about eleven minutes of total firing time, or roughly 150 to 200 three-second puffs once conversion losses are counted. Dropping to 40 watts with a higher resistance variant stretches the same cell to something like 250 to 300 puffs. That is why a mid-resistance head is a sensible choice for anyone who wants a day of use from a single charge.

  • Low resistance, high wattage: more vapour, shorter battery run time, more liquid consumed
  • Mid resistance, moderate wattage: sharper flavour, longer battery run time, longer coil life
  • Charging: done through the mod, usually by USB-C, so use a quality charger and never leave cells charging unattended overnight

Used batteries and devices should not go in household rubbish. Take them to a battery recycling point or a UK drop-off location for waste electricals, many of which are found at supermarkets, council recycling centres and vape shops.

Nicotine Strength and E-Liquid Choice

The coil itself contains no nicotine, but the liquid you put through it decides how the whole setup feels, and the right strength depends on resistance and power. Under UK rules the maximum nicotine strength in a refillable e-liquid is 20mg per millilitre, and nicotine-containing bottles are limited to 10ml. Single-use disposables, which were also capped at 20mg and 2ml of liquid, have been banned from sale in Great Britain since 1 June 2025, so a reusable tank with replaceable coils is now the mainstream route for anyone who wants a larger flavour range and lower running cost.

Nicotine behaves differently in a sub-ohm mesh setup than in a low-power pod. A low resistance head at high wattage produces a large volume of vapour with every draw, so a high-strength liquid delivers far more nicotine per puff than the same liquid in a small pod device. For that reason, high-power mesh setups are normally paired with low-strength freebase nicotine, and the 20mg salt strengths made for low-wattage pod kits are generally too harsh and too strong at 50 watts or more.

  • 0mg to 3mg: sensible starting range for the lowest resistance variants at high wattage, and the usual choice for large shortfill bottles
  • 3mg to 6mg: a common range for mid-power setups using a 50/50 or 70/30 liquid
  • 10mg and above: better suited to higher resistance heads at low wattage and a restricted draw; below 50 watts only, and with a softer nicotine salt if possible
  • Shortfills: UK law allows larger bottles of nicotine-free liquid with room for nicotine shots, so you can reach your own strength

If you are moving from cigarettes and unsure where to begin, a stop smoking service, pharmacist or your GP can advise on nicotine levels, because needs vary from person to person. As a rule, if you feel dizzy, nauseous or get a harsh hit in the throat, the strength or the power is too high and should be reduced. Keep every e-liquid out of reach of children and pets, and never refill a tank while it is hot or still attached to a charging mod.

How to Fit, Prime and Use a New Falcon Coil

Fitting a coil takes a couple of minutes and is mostly about not rushing the priming step, which is what separates a coil that tastes right from one that burns out on the first day. Work over a tissue, make sure the tank is empty and cool, and follow this order.

  • Remove the old head: unscrew the tank from the mod, take off the top cap or glass section as your tank design directs, then unscrew the old coil from the base and set it aside.
  • Check the new head: inspect the seals and cotton, and read the resistance and wattage range printed on the shell.
  • Prime it: add three or four drops of e-liquid directly into each wicking hole and onto the exposed cotton inside the centre. Squeeze the cotton lightly with the dropper tip so the liquid soaks in rather than sitting on the surface.
  • Seat it: screw the head into the base until it is snug, and no further.
  • Fill the tank: reassemble the tank and fill it to a little below the maximum, then leave it standing for about five to ten minutes so the cotton can saturate fully.
  • Start gently: set the mod to the low end of the coil's wattage range, take a few short pulls without inhaling to clear air from the cotton, then take a normal draw.
  • Raise power slowly: increase the wattage in small steps to find the point where flavour and temperature are comfortable.

Day-to-day habits matter as much as the initial prime. Do not let the tank run below the level of the wicking holes, because exposed cotton burns almost instantly. Take draws that are spaced out rather than pressing the button repeatedly, so the cotton can re-wet between pulls. Avoid exceeding the stated power range, and top up the tank before it gets low rather than after. When the head eventually ends its life, remove it with the tank cool and dry, and never dispose of used cells with it.

Spent coils contain no battery but are metal and cotton soaked in e-liquid, so seal them in a small bag if no vape-specific bin is available. Check which items your local drop-off point accepts, because policies differ between councils and retailers.

Troubleshooting Common Falcon Coil Problems

Most problems with a new mesh head come down to a handful of causes, and almost all are fixable without replacing anything. Work through the symptom first, then the likely cause.

  • Burnt or scorched taste straight after fitting: the head was not primed or the tank was filled and used immediately. Remove the tank, add more drops of liquid directly onto the cotton, leave it to soak for ten minutes and restart at lower power. If the head still tastes burnt after a full prime, the cotton may already be damaged and the head should be replaced.
  • Dry hits or a crackling sound: the cotton is not receiving liquid fast enough. Lower the wattage, check the tank level is above the wicking holes, and if you are using a very thick liquid, switch to a more balanced VG ratio.
  • Leaking from the base or airflow: check that the head is seated correctly and that the seals are intact, avoid over-filling, and make sure the tank is assembled with the glass and top cap properly tightened. Leaks that begin after a flight or a long journey are usually caused by pressure changes, and lower filling helps.
  • Gurgling or spitting: excess condensation in the chimney or airflow path. Wipe the inside of the tank and mod connection, and reduce the filling level slightly.
  • Weak or flat flavour on a previously good head: residue has built up. Try rinsing the tank, re-priming and lowering the power, and if there is no improvement after a refill, the head has reached the end of its life.
  • Mod shows a short circuit or no atomiser: the head is not making proper contact. Remove the tank, check that the contact is clean and dry, and screw the head in again. If the message persists with another head, the problem is in the tank or the mod, not the coil.

If a coil fails very early in a way that priming and lower power do not explain, keep the packaging and contact the shop. A manufacturing defect is rare but possible, and it is far easier to deal with when you still have the original pack.

Who Falcon Coils Suit and Who Should Look Elsewhere

Falcon coils suit adult vapers who already own a compatible HorizonTech Falcon tank and want a like-for-like replacement or a change in character. They also suit anyone who has moved to a reusable sub-ohm setup from single-use devices and wants proper flavour from a refillable tank, and who is comfortable with the routine of filling, priming and swapping heads. The mid-resistance variants fit people who value flavour and battery life, whereas the lowest resistance variants fit those who want dense vapour and have a mod and cells that can handle the current.

  • Good fit: owners of Falcon-series tanks, flavour-focused vapers, anyone wanting running costs lower than single-use devices
  • Good fit: adult vapers with a regulated mod rated for the coil's wattage range
  • Not a good fit: people with a different tank family, because the head will not seat or seal properly
  • Not a good fit: users of basic fixed-output pens, which often cannot drive low resistance mesh
  • Not a good fit: anyone who wants a no-maintenance device, since refillable tanks need regular attention
  • Not a good fit: non-smokers and anyone under 18, since vaping products are for adult smokers and existing vapers

A final point of honesty is that coils are not the right answer for every problem. If a tank is cracked, if the threads are damaged or if the mod cannot supply stable power, a new coil will not cure it. In those cases the cheaper fix is a new tank base or a new device, and it is better to know that before spending money on heads that will fail for the same reason.

Value for Money and Comparison With Other Coil Ranges

Value with coils is measured in cost per week rather than cost per head. A head that lasts ten days and keeps the flavour clean for most of that time is better value than a cheaper one that tastes flat after four. Falcon heads sit in the mainstream price band for branded mesh coils in the UK, which means they cost a little more than generic clones and a little less than some premium designs. Because they are priced per pack or per head, it is worth comparing the cost per coil across the variants and buying a multi-pack if you already know which one suits you.

Fair comparison with other ranges helps put this in context. Freemax mesh heads such as those used in the Mesh Pro and 904L families are known for stable flavour and a broad price range, and they have a very wide user base. Smok mesh coils, used across many TFV-series tanks, are easy to find and offer many resistance options, but their flavour and longevity vary between models. Vaporesso GT mesh heads and Uwell Caliburn and Valyrian designs are well built and popular, though they belong to different tank systems, so they are alternatives only if you are changing the whole device rather than just the coil. Geek Vape and Aspire both offer mesh heads that also perform well in their own systems.

None of these is automatically better than the others. The better choice is the head that matches your tank and gives you the flavour and life you want at a price you accept. If you already own a Falcon tank, switching to a different brand's coil means switching the whole tank, which costs far more than the difference in coil prices. Staying with the correct genuine head is generally the lowest-risk and lowest-cost path for an owner of the matching tank.

  • Buy genuine: avoids inconsistent resistance and weak welds from clones
  • Buy multi-packs: lowers the cost per head if you know your variant
  • Compare cost per week: not cost per pack, since coil life varies with how you vape
  • Keep a spare: so a worn head never leaves you without a working tank

Frequently asked questions

What nicotine strength should I use with Falcon coils?

It depends on the variant and your power setting. For lower resistance heads at high wattage, 0mg to 6mg freebase is the usual range, because the vapour volume is large. Higher resistance variants at low wattage can suit 10mg or above, and the UK maximum for any refillable liquid is 20mg per millilitre.

How do I charge a device that uses Falcon coils?

The coil itself has no battery, so there is nothing to charge in the head. You charge the mod or the internal battery of your kit, normally through USB-C. Use a good quality charger, do not leave cells charging unattended and take worn batteries to a UK recycling drop-off point.

Can I swap between the five variants for different flavours?

Yes, as long as each variant is designed for your tank. The variants change the resistance and mesh style, which alters vapour temperature, volume and flavour definition, not the liquid itself. Always check the wattage range printed on the new head and adjust your mod before you fire it.

How long does a Falcon coil last?

Most people get between one and two weeks of regular use. Sweet or dessert liquids, high wattage and dry firing shorten that, while proper priming, fruit or menthol liquids and moderate power extend it. Replace the head when flavour turns flat or burnt even after a fresh refill.

Are Falcon coils good value for money?

They sit in the mainstream price band for branded mesh heads, and cost per week is usually lower than relying on single-use devices. Buying genuine heads and a multi-pack once you know your variant keeps the cost down. Cheap clones may look better value but often have uneven resistance and shorter life.

Who should and should not buy these coils?

They suit adult vapers who own a matching Falcon-series tank and a regulated mod that can handle the coil's wattage range. They are not suitable for other tank families, fixed-output pens, non-smokers or anyone under 18. If you are unsure whether your tank is compatible, ask before ordering.

How do I know which Falcon coil fits my tank?

Check the code and resistance printed on the head currently in your tank, or look at the tank's packaging or manual. Match that against the five variants listed on this page. If the details are unclear, contact the shop with a photo of your tank and coil before you order.

How do I avoid dry hits and a burnt taste?

Prime every new head by dripping liquid onto the cotton and let the filled tank stand for five to ten minutes. Start at the low end of the wattage range, never let the tank fall below the wicking holes, and space your draws out so the cotton can re-wet. Sweet liquids and heavy chain-vaping make a burnt taste more likely.

Do you deliver Falcon coils across the UK?

Yes, orders are sent to UK addresses and the delivery options, prices and cut-off times are shown at checkout. As vaping products are age-restricted, an adult aged 18 or over must be able to receive the parcel. Check the delivery information on the site for the latest timings.

What is the warranty and returns position on coils?

Coils are consumable parts, so they are not covered for normal wear, but a head that is faulty or damaged on arrival can be dealt with under UK consumer law. Keep the original packaging and contact the shop quickly with your order details and photos. For hygiene reasons, opened or used coils are generally not eligible for a change-of-mind return, so check the returns policy before ordering.
