What nic salts are and how they differ from freebase e-liquid

Nic salts, short for nicotine salts, are a style of e-liquid that uses nicotine in salt form instead of the freebase nicotine found in traditional vape juice. The difference is mostly about how the liquid feels when you inhale. Freebase nicotine is alkaline, which is why higher strengths in standard e-liquid tend to scratch the throat. Nicotine salt is paired with a mild acid, most often benzoic acid, which brings the pH down so that the same amount of nicotine feels noticeably smoother.

That smoother feel is the main reason the category exists. It lets UK vapers use a nicotine level close to what they were used to from smoking without the harsh throat hit a freebase liquid would give at that strength. Nic salts are also absorbed a little faster, so many people find a small, low-power device is enough to feel satisfied after only a few puffs.

Most nic salt liquids are made on a balanced or PG-leaning base, commonly 50VG/50PG and sometimes 60VG/40PG. A thinner liquid wicks quickly through the small coils found in pod kits, which is exactly where nic salts are used most. A very thick, high-VG liquid in the same device would struggle to soak the cotton and could give dry, burnt-tasting hits.

Here is what you will typically see when you browse a nic salts range:

10ml nic salt bottles in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg strengths, ready to pour into a refillable pod or tank. 10ml is the largest bottle size allowed for nicotine-containing refill liquid in the UK.
Multipacks of several 10ml bottles, usually in the same strength with a mix of flavours or the same flavour repeated.
Prefilled pods and cartridges for specific pod systems, where the nic salt liquid is already sealed inside and you simply swap the pod when it runs out.

If you have only ever used freebase e-liquid in a large sub-ohm tank, nic salts will feel different: less vapour, a tighter draw and a quicker hit. That is normal and by design, not a fault with the liquid or your device.

Who nic salts suit, and who should look elsewhere

Nic salts are aimed squarely at adults who already use nicotine and want a smoother, more compact way to vape. They are not a casual product, and they are not for anyone under 18, who cannot legally buy them in the UK. If you do not currently smoke or vape, there is no reason to start.

The group that gets the most from this category tends to look like this:

Smokers switching to vaping. Someone getting through ten or more cigarettes a day usually needs a meaningful nicotine level to stay comfortable. A 10mg or 20mg nic salt delivers that in a small device without the harshness of high-strength freebase.
Pod kit and slim device users. Nic salts are designed around low-wattage, mouth-to-lung vaping, which is how almost every compact refillable pod kit works.
Former disposable vapers. Single-use vapes have been banned in Great Britain since 1 June 2025. Many people who used them now choose a reusable pod kit and a bottle of nic salt, because the draw and nicotine feel are similar and the running cost is usually lower.
Vapers who dislike throat hit. If strong freebase liquid makes you cough, a salt formulation at a sensible strength is often easier to live with.
People who want discreet, occasional use. Because the hit arrives quickly, you tend to take fewer and shorter puffs, which suits busy days and shared spaces.

Nic salts are usually not the right fit for these situations:

Big cloud chasing. If you want dense vapour from a sub-ohm tank at 50W or more, a 3mg or 6mg high-VG freebase liquid is the sensible choice. High-strength nic salt at that power is harsh and delivers far more nicotine than most people want.
Very low nicotine needs. If you are already down to 3mg or less, a freebase liquid gives you finer control than a salt.
Anyone sensitive to nicotine. Start low, with 5mg or 10mg, and only move up if you genuinely need to. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a heart condition, speak to a pharmacist or GP before using any nicotine product.

Nic salt strengths: 5mg, 10mg, 20mg and the UK cap

In the UK, nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20mg/ml, which is the same as 2 percent. That cap applies to every refill bottle and prefilled pod sold here, and it is the same ceiling that applied to single-use vapes before they were banned. You will therefore see three common nic salt strengths on sale:

5mg/ml (0.5%). Light. Suitable for occasional users, people stepping down, or anyone using a device with an open airflow.
10mg/ml (1%). Medium. A common starting point for people who smoked around five to ten cigarettes a day, or for those who find 20mg too strong.
20mg/ml (2%). The legal maximum. Typically chosen by heavier ex-smokers using a tight, low-wattage pod device.

Because a salt is smoother, it is easy to overshoot. A 20mg nic salt will not scratch the throat the way a 20mg freebase would, which can make it feel gentler than it actually is. Watch for the signs of too much nicotine: light-headedness, nausea, a racing pulse or a headache. If that happens, put the device down and drop a strength next time.

Some practical rules of thumb:

If you take long, slow draws or use a looser airflow, you inhale more vapour per puff, so a lower strength usually works.
If you take short, tight draws on a small pod, a higher strength may be needed to feel satisfied.
Do not use 20mg nic salt in a device running above roughly 25W or with a coil below about 0.6 ohm. The nicotine load per puff climbs quickly and the result is unpleasant.
Moving down a strength once a month or so is an easy way to reduce intake gradually, if that is your goal.

Many vapers report that a 10mg salt feels roughly comparable to a mid-strength freebase of 3mg to 6mg in a larger device, although this varies from person to person and from device to device. Treat it as a starting guide rather than a rule, and give any new strength a few days before deciding.

Choosing flavours: how profiles behave in nic salts

Flavour is where most people spend the longest when choosing, and nic salts have a few quirks worth knowing. Because the liquid is usually thinner and the coils are small, flavours tend to taste crisp and direct rather than rounded and heavy. Fruity and cooling profiles often come across especially clearly.

The main flavour families you will find are:

Fruit. Strawberry, blue raspberry, watermelon, mango, grape and mixed berry blends are the staples. They are generally forgiving and easy to like.
Ice and menthol. Fruit or plain menthol with a cooling agent added. The intensity varies a lot between brands, so a bottle labelled ice from one maker can be far cooler than another.
Sweet and dessert. Custard, bakery, cream and candy styles. These can taste excellent but the sweeteners used tend to build up on the coil, so expect to change coils a little sooner.
Tobacco. Often the first choice for people switching from cigarettes. In a salt format tobacco flavours are usually mellow, with notes of caramel, nuts or dried leaf rather than a harsh smoke taste.
Drinks. Cola, energy drink, lemonade and iced tea profiles, which tend to be light and refreshing.

A few buying habits help avoid wasted money:

Try one or two bottles of a flavour before buying a multipack. Taste is personal, and a description of a flavour is only a rough guide.
Keep a second flavour in reserve. Flavour fatigue, where a favourite starts to taste dull after a week or two, is common and rotating usually fixes it.
If you are coming off cigarettes, many people find that a tobacco or menthol flavour helps in the first couple of weeks, with fruit flavours becoming more appealing afterwards.
Avoid switching flavour and strength at the same time. If something feels off, you will not know which change caused it.

UK vaping rules are under active review, including powers to restrict flavours, packaging and display in future. Availability can therefore change over time, so check each product page for current details.

Devices and pod compatibility: what works with nic salts

Nic salts are built for low-power, mouth-to-lung devices. That means refillable pod kits, slim all-in-one devices and small tank starter kits running a coil of roughly 0.6 to 1.2 ohm at modest wattage, typically somewhere between 8W and 25W. In that range the liquid wicks properly, the flavour is clean and the nicotine delivery feels as intended.

Before you buy a bottle, it helps to understand which category your device falls into:

Open refillable pod kits. You fill the pod yourself from a 10ml bottle. These accept any compatible liquid, so nic salts from any brand will work. Widely used examples include pod systems from Vaporesso, Oxva, Uwell, Smok, Voopoo and Geekvape, although you should always confirm the exact model.
Closed or prefilled pod systems. These only accept their own sealed pods. A separate bottle of nic salt cannot be used in them, and trying to refill a sealed pod can leak or damage the device.
Sub-ohm tanks and high-wattage kits. These are designed for thicker, lower-strength freebase liquids. Nic salts are not recommended here, particularly at 10mg and above.

Things to check on any refillable pod device:

Pod capacity. UK rules limit refillable tanks and pods to 2ml, so every legal device holds 2ml or less. That is why you will refill more often than with a large tank.
Fill port. Some pods have a small silicone plug and a narrow opening. Most 10ml bottles have a thin nozzle that fits, but it is worth checking before relying on a particular pairing.
Coil type. Mesh coils give more flavour and vapour and suit balanced liquids, but they use more liquid. Standard cotton or ceramic coils are gentler and can last longer on sweet flavours.
Airflow. Adjustable airflow is useful with nic salts. A tighter draw feels closer to a cigarette, while a looser one is better for lower strengths.
Battery. A pod kit with a battery of around 400mAh to 1000mAh will usually last a day for light users. Heavier users may want a larger battery or a device with pass-through charging.

If you are unsure whether a particular device suits nic salts, check the manufacturer's recommended wattage and coil range. Our product pages list the specifications that matter, and the liquid's base ratio and strength are always shown on the label.

Popular brands and formats compared

Nic salt ranges in the UK are crowded, and the same names tend to appear again and again. The notes below describe general house styles rather than guarantees, since every brand rotates flavours and formulations. Stock can vary, so treat this as a map of what you will commonly see.

Elfliq. The liquid line from the team behind the Elf Bar disposables. It is popular with people who liked those devices and want the same fruit and ice flavour families in a refillable format. Typically offered in 10mg and 20mg.
IVG Salt. A broad catalogue covering fruit, ice, dessert and candy styles in 10ml bottles. A reasonable choice if you want plenty of variety from a single brand.
Hayati Pro Max Salt. Known for a sweet, dessert-leaning profile with rich flavours. Often chosen by people who prefer cream, custard and bakery notes.
Nasty Salt. A fruit-and-ice focused range with strong, punchy flavour and a distinctly cool finish on many bottles.
Dinner Lady Salts. Dessert and fruit blends with a reputation for layered, carefully balanced recipes.
Pod Salt. A simpler range built around pod kit use, with approachable fruit, menthol and tobacco styles.
Bar Juice. Fruit and ice focused liquids, widely sold in nic salt form and often available in multipacks.

Brand aside, the format you choose also matters:

Single 10ml bottle. The sensible way to try a flavour. You pay a little more per ml but risk less.
Multipack. Usually lower cost per bottle. Sensible once you already know you like the flavour and strength.
50VG/50PG base. Slightly more throat feel and flavour carry, with a thinner liquid that suits very small coils.
60VG/40PG or similar. Smoother and a touch thicker, with a bit more vapour. Fine in most pod kits with mesh or larger coils.
Prefilled pods. Convenient and mess-free, but locked to one system and often more expensive per ml than bottles.

For a first purchase, a single 10ml bottle at 10mg in a flavour you already know you enjoy is a lower-risk start than a multipack of something new.

UK law and what the limits mean for you

Nic salts sold in the UK sit under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, usually shortened to TRPR, which implemented the EU Tobacco Products Directive limits in UK law. For buyers the practical effects are straightforward:

Maximum 20mg/ml nicotine. Any bottle or pod claiming more is not legal for sale here.
Maximum 10ml per refill bottle when the liquid contains nicotine.
Maximum 2ml tank or pod capacity on refillable devices and prefilled pods.
Child-resistant and tamper-evident packaging, with a leaflet and a prominent health warning stating that the product contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance.
Notification to the MHRA before products can be sold, with ingredients listed on the pack.
18 and over only. It is illegal to sell to under-18s and illegal to buy on behalf of an under-18.

The 20mg cap is also the figure that used to apply to disposable vapes, which were limited to 2ml of liquid, roughly 600 puffs. Since 1 June 2025 single-use vapes have been banned in Great Britain. Reusable devices with refillable or replaceable pods remain legal, which is why nic salt bottles and pod kits are now the usual route for people who liked the disposable format.

Vaping products duty, which is charged per 10ml of liquid, now adds a fixed cost to every bottle regardless of brand. That is a UK-wide cost applied to all sellers, so it should not be read as a sign that one shop is overcharging.

A few other points worth knowing:

The law continues to develop. Proposals around flavours, packaging, display and where vaping is permitted are being discussed, so rules in a year may differ from today.
Rules for travelling abroad vary by country. Some places ban vapes entirely, so check before you fly.

Buying tips and how to spot genuine stock

Counterfeit and non-UK-market vape products do circulate, and nic salts are no exception. The good news is that legitimate UK stock is required to carry specific information, which makes most fakes easy to catch if you know what to look for.

On a genuine UK nic salt bottle you should expect to see:

A volume of 10ml or less for nicotine liquid.
A nicotine strength shown in mg/ml, never above 20mg/ml.
The required health warning in English, printed clearly and covering a set share of the front and back of the pack.
A child-resistant cap and a tamper-evident seal that is intact when you open it.
A list of ingredients, a batch number and a best-before date.
Manufacturer or UK responsible person details, and an information leaflet inside the box.

Warning signs that should make you stop:

Strengths above 20mg/ml, or bottles larger than 10ml with nicotine in them.
Packaging with no English health warning, or text that looks blurred, mis-spelled or badly printed.
A missing or already-broken tamper seal.
Prices far below what other UK retailers charge for the same item. Heavy discounts are not proof of a fake, but a price that looks too good to be true often is.
No clear company name, address, returns policy or customer contact on the seller's site.

Some brands also add QR codes or scratch-off verification labels that you can check on the manufacturer's site. If your bottle has one, use it. You can also check the batch number against the details on the pack, and contact the retailer if anything looks inconsistent.

When ordering, buy from a UK-based retailer that verifies age, states its returns process clearly and lists contact details. If your order arrives damaged or leaking, photograph the parcel and contents and contact the seller promptly so it can be resolved.

Honest value guidance: what nic salts really cost to run

Nic salts can be economical, but the cheapest bottle is not always the good-value choice, and the cheapest bottle is not always genuine either. A fair comparison looks at the whole cost of running the setup, not just the sticker price of a single bottle.

The main elements are:

The device. Entry-level refillable pod kits are inexpensive and perfectly adequate for nic salts. Spending more tends to buy better build quality, a bigger battery, adjustable airflow or longer-lasting coils rather than a different kind of vaping.
Liquid. Most people choose 10ml bottles, with multipacks lowering the cost per bottle. Typical pricing sits in a fairly narrow band, with premium brands costing a little more and house or budget lines costing a little less.
Coils and pods. Replacement coils or pods are a recurring cost. Sweet and dessert flavours wear coils faster, so a cheap liquid that kills a coil every few days is not actually cheap.
Electricity and cables. Small, but worth remembering if you vape heavily.

How long does a bottle last? It varies a lot. A light user on 10mg may get a couple of weeks from 10ml, while a heavy user on a higher-power device may finish a bottle in two or three days. Tracking this for the first month tells you what you actually spend, and it makes multipack deals easier to judge.

Some honest points on value:

Moving from disposables to a refillable kit usually lowers the cost per day once you have bought the device, since you are no longer paying for a new battery and plastic shell each time.
Higher nicotine strengths do not cost more, but they tend to be used faster by those who need them, so factor that in.
Do not choose purely on price. Poor-quality liquid, wrong strength or a mismatched device often leads to wasted money and disappointment.
If you are using vaping to move away from smoking, compare your weekly spend before and after. Many people find the saving is real, but results depend on how heavily you vape.

A sensible approach is to start with one reliable pod kit and a small number of bottles, then adjust. Buying a drawer full of flavours on day one rarely pays off.

Care, storage, coil life and recycling

A little routine care makes nic salts taste better, last longer and keep you and others safer.

Storing liquid. Keep bottles upright, with the cap fully closed, somewhere cool, dark and out of direct sunlight. Heat and light degrade e-liquid and can change its colour and taste. Most nic salts remain in good condition for a year or more when stored correctly, and the best-before date on the box is your guide. Nicotine is toxic if swallowed or spilled on skin in large amounts, so always keep bottles away from children and pets.

Filling and priming. Fill the pod to just below the maximum line, without overfilling, which causes leaks and flooded coils. When you fit a new coil, add a few drops straight onto the cotton and let the pod sit for five to ten minutes before your first puff. Skipping this step is the quickest way to burn a fresh coil.

Coil life. As a rough guide, a coil can last anywhere from one to three weeks depending on the liquid, power and how often you vape. Sweet flavours shorten that. Signs it is time to change the coil include:

A burnt or flat taste that does not clear after refilling.
Gurgling or spitting from the mouthpiece.
A noticeably darker liquid inside the pod.
Reduced vapour even when the pod is full.

Cleaning. Rinse the empty pod with warm water, let it dry fully, then refill. Wipe the battery contacts with a dry cloth. Never submerge the device itself.

Charging. Use the cable supplied or a reputable replacement, and do not leave a device charging unattended for long periods or under pillows or bedding. If a battery swells, overheats or smells odd, stop using it.

Recycling. Vapes contain lithium batteries, which are a fire risk in general waste and kerbside recycling bins. Never put a device, battery or pod containing a battery in household rubbish. Instead:

Take used or broken devices to a household waste recycling centre that accepts small electricals.
Return them to a shop that sells vapes. UK retailers have take-back obligations for waste electrical items.
Use the Recycle Your Electricals drop-off finder to locate a nearby collection point.

Empty plastic bottles can usually go in household plastic recycling once emptied, but check your local council's rules because some areas treat nicotine residue differently.

Frequently asked questions

Who should buy nic salts?

Nic salts are intended for adult smokers and existing vapers who want a smoother hit at a higher nicotine level in a compact pod kit. They are not suitable for anyone under 18 or for people who do not already use nicotine. If you are a heavier smoker moving to vaping, a 10mg or 20mg salt in a low-wattage pod device is the usual starting point.

Which nic salt strength should I choose?

A rough guide is 5mg for light or occasional use, 10mg for moderate use, and 20mg for heavier ex-smokers using a tight, low-power device. The UK legal maximum is 20mg/ml. Start lower if unsure, since salts feel smoother than they are, and step up only if you do not feel satisfied after a few days.

Can I use nic salts in any pod or vape?

No. Nic salts suit low-wattage, mouth-to-lung devices with coils of roughly 0.6 to 1.2 ohm. They work in open refillable pod kits but cannot be added to sealed prefilled-pod systems, and they are not recommended for high-wattage sub-ohm tanks. Always check your device's recommended liquid type and wattage before filling.

Do nic salts and vape devices come with a warranty?

E-liquid does not carry a warranty in the usual sense, but you can return an item that arrives faulty, damaged or not as described. Devices and coils are covered by the manufacturer's terms, and the warranty length depends on the brand. Keep your order confirmation and contact us promptly with photos if anything is wrong.

How long does delivery take and is age checked?

Delivery options, costs and estimated times are shown at checkout before you pay. Because nicotine products are restricted to adults, age verification may be required when you order or on delivery. Make sure an adult over 18 is available to receive the parcel.

How can I tell if a nic salt bottle is genuine?

Check for a 10ml or smaller bottle, a strength no higher than 20mg/ml, an English health warning, a child-resistant cap, an intact tamper-evident seal, a batch number and a best-before date. Be cautious of heavily discounted prices, missing seller details or blurred printing. Where a brand offers a QR or scratch-code check, use it.

Why is 20mg the highest strength I can buy?

UK regulations cap nicotine e-liquid and prefilled pods at 20mg/ml. This limit comes from the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 and applies to all sellers. Anything advertised above this level is not legal for sale in the UK and should be avoided.

How long will a 10ml bottle of nic salt last?

It depends on your device, power setting and how often you vape. A light user on 10mg may take a couple of weeks to finish a bottle, while a heavier user can get through one in two to four days. Keeping a note for your first month helps you decide whether multipacks make sense.

Where can I recycle my old vape and pods?

Do not put vapes, batteries or battery-containing pods in your household bin or kerbside recycling, because lithium batteries can cause fires. Take them to a household waste recycling centre that accepts small electricals, return them to a vape retailer, or find a drop-off point through the Recycle Your Electricals locator.
